Theme: “Designing Dignity”
The RDW Student Design Competition 2026 is organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID) as part of MIID Reka Design Week 2026. The competition serves as a platform for interior design students to showcase their creativity, design thinking, and technical skills through innovative design solutions.
Aligned with the MIID Reka Design Week 2026 theme, “Designing Dignity”, the competition encourages participants to explore how design can enhance human well-being, inclusivity, accessibility, and quality of life. Through their proposals, students are encouraged to consider how thoughtful design can create meaningful, functional, and dignified experiences for users and communities.
The competition aims to encourage students to explore new ideas, challenge conventional approaches, and demonstrate their ability to respond to contemporary design issues. It also provides participants with opportunities to gain industry recognition, receive professional feedback, and present their work to a wider audience.
OBJECTIVES

To encourage creativity, innovation, and excellence in interior design education.

To foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills through design exploration.

To promote awareness of current and future challenges within the built environment.

To strengthen engagement between design students, educational institutions, and the professional design industry.

To recognise and celebrate outstanding achievements in student design.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entrants must be active students and registered MIID Student Members at the time of submission.

Each student may submit only one (1) project entry.
-
There is no limit to the number of entries submitted by each institution, provided that each entry is submitted by a different eligible student.

Each entry shall be subject to the prescribed entry fee.

All student project submissions must be endorsed by a lecturer from their respective institution.
COMPETITION CATEGORIES
Two competition categories are open for entry. Each design proposal must be developed based on the designated floor plan provided by the Organiser for the selected category.
Participants are required to develop a design proposal for a future-ready kitchen within the designated floor plan provided by the Organiser. The design should respond to evolving lifestyles, technological advancements, sustainability considerations, and changing user needs. The proposal should demonstrate creativity, functionality, innovation, and an understanding of how kitchens may adapt to future living environments.
A — Diploma Category
Future Kitchen Design
Participants are required to develop a design proposal for a contemporary public toilet within the designated floor plan provided by the Organiser. The design should enhance user experience through thoughtful consideration of accessibility, inclusivity, sustainability, hygiene, and functionality. The proposal should demonstrate creativity, spatial efficiency, and an enhanced user experience.
B — Degree Category

THE JUDGES

The judging panel, comprising distinguished design professionals and industry luminaries, shall be appointed by the Organiser.

All decisions made by the judges are final and binding in all matters relating to the competition.
JUDGING CRITERIA
Concept
& Ideas
Originality, creativity, sustainability, unique features, overall impact, and impression of the design proposal.
Design Statement / Narrative
Clarity, conciseness, and articulation of the design intent, concept, and project goals.
Spatial Planning
Effectiveness of layout, overall spatial flow, practicality, zoning, circulation, and spatial relationships.
Materials & Finishes
Suitability and coherence of colour scheme, material selection, furniture, and fixtures.
Presentation Skills
Quality and clarity of visual presentation, including 3D perspectives, plans, sections, and overall graphical communication.
ENTRY FEES & PAYMENT

The entry fee is RM50 per entry.

All payments must be received before the registration closing deadline. A copy of the proof of payment must be uploaded and submitted together with the registration form.

Please ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements before making payment. Any entrant found to be ineligible after payment has been made will be automatically disqualified, and the entry fee will not be refunded.
ENTRY SUBMISSION MATERIALS

All entries must be submitted via the Google Form link in the "Submit Entry Now" below.

Participants are required to upload their submission to Google Drive and submit the corresponding shareable link through the Google Form. It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure that file access permissions are enabled to allow the Organiser to view and download the submission for evaluation and judging purposes.

Submission format: one (1) composite A1-size board in portrait orientation only, in JPEG format only, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, and must not exceed 50 MB in file size.
​

Entries shall include sufficient information to communicate the design proposal, including a design statement or narrative, concept development and morphology, layout plans, 3D perspective renderings, and other relevant supporting drawings or presentation materials.
​

There shall be no marks or identifying information (including, but not limited to, names, institution names, logos, or watermarks) on any submission materials that may reveal the identity of the entrant. This requirement applies to all materials, including write-ups, project briefs, drawings, plans, renderings, and photographs. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disqualification.

Registration and payment must be completed no later than Sunday, 18 July 2026, at 11:59 PM.

Late registrations or payments will not be accepted.
SUBMISSION CLOSING DATE & TIME

All entries must be submitted via the Google Form link no later than Sunday, 2 August 2026, at 11:59 PM.

Any entry received after the submission deadline will be automatically disqualified.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNERS

The winners of the RDW Student Design Competition will be announced during MIID Reka Design Week 2026 in September 2026.

Shortlisted and winning entries will be showcased at the MIID Reka Design Week 2026 Exhibition at Pavilion Damansara.
-
Winning entries will also be featured and promoted through MIID’s official social media platforms and authorised publication channels.
GENERAL TERMS & CONDITIONS

The RDW Student Design Competition 2026 is organised by the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers (MIID), hereinafter referred to as the “Organiser”.

By submitting an entry, participants confirm that all submitted materials do not infringe any copyright laws. The Organiser shall not be held responsible for any copyright infringement arising from submitted entries.
​

The Organiser reserves the right to reproduce, publish, exhibit, and retain submitted materials for promotional, exhibition, and archival purposes without compensation to participants.
​

The Organiser shall not be responsible for any costs incurred by participants in the preparation or submission of entries.
​

Submitted entries may be selected by MIID for use in other competitions, exhibitions, or events at its sole discretion.
​

All decisions made by the judges are final and binding, and no correspondence or appeals will be entertained.

Finalists and winners of the RDW Student Design Competition 2026 may be required to present their work upon request by MIID.

By participating, entrants agree to be bound by all terms and conditions. The Organiser reserves the right to amend the terms and conditions at any time as deemed necessary.
